Health
For the health care of the citizens, general hospitals have been established at the township level and special hospitals have been provided for the treatment of tuberculosis, kidney, bone, eyes, ear, nose and throat. Many private clinics of high standard have also been made available. The Ministry of Health, together with non-governmental organisations like the Maternity and Child Welfare Association have undertaken general health education programmes and have implemented campaigns for child immunization, breast feeding, birth-spacing, personal hygiene, food sanitation and safety of pharmaceuticals. Support has been tendered to institutions which look after handicapped persons and disabled veterans have been given generous pensions.White Cane Day is celebrated annually. Some old age centres have been set up through the generosity of the citizens and there is the continuation of the traditional family practice to care for the aged .A hospice has been opened through private initiative.

YCDC employs over 4500 workers and over 150 garbage trucks working day and night shifts to clear over 1000 tons of garbage in the townships.Warning bell, garbage disposal tank, garbage can and bag system are used for systematic garbage collection. The public is also educated in keeping the city clean. The careless disposal of garbage in backstreets has been discouraged. The system of collection of " night soil " has been abandoned in favour of the sewage system. All new housing units have means of sewage disposal. Yangon is conscious of health as an urban issue and is trying to create a healthy city which is commited to health for its citizens.
Education
"Every school age child in school" and "education for all" are the mottoes which guide Yangon City in its educational effort. In order to catch up with the information age all high schools and even primary schools are being equipped with computers to help students become familiar with electronic media. A complementary approach in education is to develop a healthy moral mind in a healthy active body. Schools train pupils in moral and social behaviour. As a further support toward this goal monastic schools have been revived .These monastic schools played an important part in the social life of the people in monarchical days but were dismantled by the foreign rulers. Now more than 1530 monastic schools have been reopened. Public libraries give access to the reading public in all the townships.
Transportation
The citizens of Yangon like citizens of any big city face the problem of transportation..The phenomenal growth of the number of cars on the road results in traffic congestion and some waiting at intersection traffic lights. Yangon has no underground railway. All traffic is on the surface. Every effort is being made to lighten the burden of transportation for the citizen. Bigger and more buses are being put on the road and aircondition buses ply the main routes. The city is being converted from a monocore city to a multicore city with convenient access being made possible to amenities locally so that citizens can avoid using transportation into the busier sections of the city and to create local employment.
Sports and Leisure
Strong support is given to sports so that citizens can participate and prove themselves. A Sports Institute has been established for promising sportsmen and girls who receive rigorous training. The number of sports in which citizens can participate has been increased. For younger people to become interested in sports, the National Sports Festivals are held annually, visiting each divisional town a year for participants to appreciate the life and culture of the district people.. Yangon has hosted several of these sports festivals in which thousands of students take part. International stadiums and swimming pools have been constructed while housing estates also provide pools for both practice and relaxation. Golf is popular and Yangon
