Myanmar is covered heavily with hills and mountain ranges and most of them can be found in the north, east and west, whereas wide plains and valleys cover the central part of the country. The hills, mountain ranges and plateaus stand in row from north to south, with the higher mountains in the north gradually descending to lower heights in the south. Myanmar's geopraphical patterns can be categorized into four types, consisting of the highland plateaus in the east, the mountain ranges in the west, the central plains and the Rakhine coastal region. The geographical gradient is a descent from north to south, as a result of which its rivers and creeks have their sources in the highlands and mountains in the north and flow into the sea in the south. The four outstanding rivers of Myanmar are the Ayeyarwady, the Thanlwin, the Chindwin and the Sittaung. The Ayeyarwady River is 1,238 miles long, having the high utility value for Myanmar. The Thanlwin river is 796 miles long, the Chindwin 691 miles and the Sittaung approximately 186 miles.
