The Ministry of Information was foundation was founded in November 1946. Myanmar radio was in the air as early as 1936. It emerged as Burma Broadcasting Service in 1946 and again changed to Myanma A than in 1958. Due to the expansion of work, the Information and Broadcasting Department was born in 1972. It took the new name as Myanmar Television and Radio when the television system was introduced. It took the present title Myanmar Radio and Television in 1997.
Objectives :
Information, education and entertaining are the essential task of the Ministry of Information. It applies printed media and electronic media in executing the duties.
The Ministry of Information utilized modern mass media techniques to meet the political, economic and social objectives of the State.
As an experienced establishment it is now informing, educating and entertaining the public with the following objectives-
- To information the people about the
State's policies and its long and short term plans.
- To educate and organize the people through mass media.
Encouragement are being made to revitalize the patriotic spirit to perpetuate Union Spirit and to develop human resources. The Ministry is striving hard as the fourth pillar to win the heart of the people in marching towards the peaceful modern and developed nation together with the patriotic armies forces.
Organizational Set-up
In executing the duties the Ministry of Information directs and supervises two departments and three enterprises, it all cooperates.

Myanmar Radio and Television ( MRTV)
The objectives are :
- To inform the State's Policies, endeavors
and public events timely and correctly
- To enlighten the knowledge of the
national people and
- To entertain the public
MRTV has five different divisions to fulfill the above mentioned tasks, they are :
- Broadcasting Division
- Television Division
- Television Division ( English )
- Engineering Division and
- Administration Division
Myanma Radio transmits through Am, Fm
Short wave and medium wave TV programmers are television via Thai com 3. One main earth stations and (141) separate transpondig stations in different locations are all in operation. TV transmission are in the air for (9) to (10) hours on weekdays and (13) to (14) hours weekends.
Myanmar television started with color system since its beginning in 1980. Country wise transmission commenced after the Sagaing Kalay Station were completed. Due to the use of Thai com 3 digital system, and relay stations in the country MRTV covers 87 percent of the Union and can even reach over 120 countries in Southeast Asia, Middle Asia, Africa, Eastern, Europe , Japan and Australia.
Transmission Programmes
In addition to news and entertainment programmers, MRTV transmits programmes on endeavors of various ministries and education programmes for various ministries and education programmes for youth and children .
Brief news national news international news, editorials, weekly news reel sports news, economy news, music perspective etc are some of the programmes of Myanmar Radio.
Programmes such as since news, sport and delicious cooks, books- the friend of men, answeries queries, things to remember, medicine and health, sports and fitness women's magazines, quit agriculture the strength of nation industries force ahead, about computers respectable grand parents lessons on English language, theatrical art6s of Myanmar, Myanmar culture, on World Music, Arts and culture by famous artists, musicians, poets and authors are some of the educative programmes by Myanmar Radio.
Some of the MRTV' s programmes are strong and Healthy Myanmar, plant the Trees and Make The National , Let's Do Farming, Interviews, (12) Objectives of the State, People's Desire, and educational Programmes for Universities, colleges and schools and lessons for University of Distance Education students etc.

MRTV has systematically formed the five committees in order to prevent decadent alien culture, to preserve and nurture Myanmar traditional culture, They are :

- Committee for Myanmar Classical Song and
- Programme Editing committee.
Information and Public Relations Department
Actually this department had emerged during the time of World War II to deal with propaganda. On 24 January 1991 The Information and Public Relations Department was founded.
In 1962, under the Revolutionary Council Government reading rooms of district and townships were upgraded to libraries. In 1972, when the new administration system was introduced, the Director of the Information and Broadcasting Department was formed.
The State law and Order Restoration Council Government created the Information and public Relations Department to fulfill the needs of growing population and border areas development works.
IPRD is executing its duties with an aim to inform the public with true local and foreign news to educate and to entertain the people.
IPRD is composed of three division Administrative Division Production Division, and Public Relations Division, First Division deals with management and financial matters in support of the two remaining divisions.
Production Division publishes records on the State's endeavors, border areas development affairs, pamphlets, posters and booklets or educative matters staff of this division provides editors news photographers, liaison officers and exhibition organizers.
Photographic section under the Production Division constantly keeps records on State's achievement, Local and international trips of national leaders and provides necessary support for publishing and exhibition works.
Information and Public Relations Division manages the matter relating to all the branch offices across the country. These offices are equipped with audio visual media apparatuses and published materials to inform, to educate and to entertain the people. Books are lent to the general public who have registered as borrowers free of charge. TV programmes for University of Distance Education students are being shown. Children reading rooms are opened in every PRD libaries. Photographic show's exhibitions and wall news papers are being arranged for the interest of the people. In addition to these services, mobile libraries are being organized for the benefit of the rural village folks.
Throughout the country, there are (62) district offices, (245) townships offices and (6) sub-township offices operating public relations and information services.
Printing and Publishing Enterprise
The government press was set up in 1800 just after the introduction of letterpress to Myanmar. Objectives of the enterprise are :
- To carry out literary promotion works in
accordance with the State polices for developing the standard of
literature and enhancing knowledge of the national people through
mass media.
- To fulfill the requirements of the state organizations in printing works in Rime with the planned objectives.
Literary Promotion
To promote literature, (a) Literary Award (b) Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Award and (c) Pakokku U Ohn Pe Literary.
Award are selected and awarded annually. moreover, as an activity for literary promotion, Paper Reading Session are being held twice a year, and later these papers are published for the benefit of researcher, and greneral public.
Sarpay Beikman Book Society was established with the aim to attract more and more readers. Prise winning manuscripts of Sarpay Beikman Manuseripts awards are published and distributed to its members at cheap prices.
Library and Literary Research
Sarpay Beikman Library started its operation since 1956. It has over 58000 collections of books both in English and Myanmar languages . There is also a reference library with over 5000 English and Myanmar books waiting for editor, authors and researchers.
News and periodicals Enterprise (NPE)
Newspaper was first published in 1938.Circulation of newspapers are being carried out in line with (8) policies and (11)guidlines laid down by the State.

NPE is circulating three dailies the Kyemon, the Myanmar Alin and an only English newspaper, the New light of Myanmar.
Duties of NPE
Duties of NPE are :
- Newspaper printing
- publishing of monthly Guardian magazine
- Covering news and activities of the state
and informing to news papers, radio and television for timely
announcement.
- Receiving and informing of international
news to press and publishing news bulletins and
- To gain profit out of these activities.
Myanmar Motion Picture Enterprise
In December 1968 some cinema halls across the country were nationalized and Motion Picture Corporation was formed in July 1st 1970. when the State Law and Order. Restoration Council assumed state power, the corporation was renamed as the motion Picture Enterprise. The present name Myanmar motion Picture Enterprise was adoptede in accord with the Governments meeting (26/97) held on July,9th 1997.
Objectives
The objectives of the MMPE are :
- To ensure orderly operation in all
respects of production, import, export, distribution and
exhibition on of motion pictures.
- To promote production of artistic,
educative and entertaining pictures and
- To permit, supervise and censor video production in line with procedures prescribed under the Television and Video Act.
Tasks
The tasks carried out by the MMPE are :
- Production
- Exhibition
- Import of foreign films
- Film censoring
- Video Censoring and video industry
supervision and
- Promotion of Myanmar Film Industry.
Myanmar Film Promotion Board
The ministry of information appointed Myanmar Film Promotion Board in 1952.Awarding outstanding motion picture prizes is held once a year and there by promotion the standard of Myanmar film is the purpose of this board. Guiding principles for prize selection are:
- Promotion the standard of Myanmar film by
conferring outstanding film awarded.
- Attaining quality performance by trying
to achieve distinguished actor award.
- Best film award, best director award, best supporting actor and actress awards best photographer award, script award, music award and sound award are bestowed annually.
Three main national causes and the twelve objectives of the State are information Ministry's guiding principles.
