The historical background of the Ministry of Electric Power:
Electricity, supplying in Myanmar was started by private licensees in 1908 and the Electricity
supply Board founded in 1951 after the Independence gained. In the regime of the Revolutionary Council 1972, The Electricity Supply Board was reorganized as the Electricity Power Corporation. In 1989, the State Law and Order Restoration Council took the responsibility of the state and established the Myanmar Electric Power Enterprise. Finally the State Peace and Development council transformed the Myanmar Electric Power Enterprise into the Ministry of Electric Power on the 15th of
November 1997 to work out more effectively in Electric Power sector.
- To employ gas turbmi power
generator only for short term and to rely on hydroelectric power
as one vital source of energy sufficiency.
- To generate and distribute more
electricity or economic development
- To reduce losses and conserve electric
energy for future energy sufficiency of our nation.
- To promote electricity production from new and renewable sources of
energy.
Objectives
- To identify all the hydropower resources
in Myanmar and conduct feasibility studies.
- To utilize internal expertise and
equipment as well as imported machinery to develop mini hydropower
- Depending on the feasibility studies,
development of large hydropower projects must be urgently
implemented.
- To utilize hydropower as base load and
that from gas turbine as peak load.
- In order to reduce the use of natural
gas for power generation, combined cycle power plants are to
be implemented.
- To expand the National Grid System
gradually to cover Industrial zones and towns and villages which
are currently supplied by diesel generating sets.
National Hydel Resources
Myanmar with many rivers topographically is endowed with abundant
hydropower resources. Yet Myanmar Electric Power Enterprise has already identified
267 places with the total capacity of 39,624 MW.
Existing hydro Power Stations constitute only (320)MW and
hence only 1% of the total resources has been developed.
Transmission Line
Total (4427)miles of 66KV, 132KV and 230 KV transmissions
lines were in service before 1988 and the total (4969.63) miles have been
extended to date.
Projects for export of power to neighboring Countries Htamanlthi Hydro electiric Power Project
Located at Chindwin river, north of Homemalin in Sagaing
Division. Joining with an India Power Delegation Team, Myanmar Electric Power
Enterprise launched preliminary investigation and site survey on November 1999.
Power generated from Htamanlti will be used locally and will be exported to India.
Hutgyi Hydroelectric Power Project
Surveying and investigation works have been done at Hutgyi, in Thanlwin River Basin, Shan State. Possible exploration of proposed site was surveyed by Marubeni/NEW JEC led construction and the project has to be implemented phase by phase power generated will be exported to Thailand and used locally some part of it.
Tasang Hydroelectric Power Project
This project site is also located in Thanlwin River Basin, Shan State and named Tasang. GMS Power Public Co, of Thailand and Lehmeyer of Germany studie the Field investigation works. Power generated from Tasang is also to be exported to Thailand and used locally.
Tanintharyi Hydroelectric Power Project
Reports on the prelinunary study of (5) promising sites on Tanintharyi river in Tanintharyi Division was done by Nippon Koei Company of Japan had been submitted in February 1997.After developing the Project excess power can be exported to Thailand.
Nam Kok Hydroelectric Power Project
Nam Kok, one of the prospective site of Hydro Power resources would be on Thai-Myanmar border, had been completely investigated about the preliminary study.
