The Ministry of Transport was reorganized in 1992. The Ministry
is made up of the Department of Transport, the Department of Marine
Administration, the Department of Waterways, the Department of Civil Aviation,
the Institute of Marine Technology, Inland Water Transport, Myanmar Five Star
Line, Myanmar Airways, Myanmar Dockyards and Port Authority.
Air Transport
There are 66 air ports under the Department of Civil Aviation, 29 air ports are
used mainly for transportation and the rest 37 airports are short run-way
airports.
Airport Extension Projects
Due to the potential of increasing numbers of large aircraft of air services in
Myanmar in the future, Yangon International Airport Extension Project, the new
Project for construction of Hanthawady International Airport, the project for
construction of Mandalay International Airport and other projects for improving
international airports are implemented.
Air flights
In domestic service, there are flights with destinations of 19 townships from
Yangon, and 6 townships from Mandalay. Moreover, Myanmar Airways, in cooperation
with Yangon Airways, Air Mandalay and Myanmar Airways International is carrying
out the domestic flights.
Air Mandalay by using ATR 72.210 airplanes is shuffling to Chaingmai and Phuket
in Thailand. At present Myanmar Airways International has 25 flights to
Bangkok, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Kumming and Singapore per week.
Myanmar Helicopter International in cooperation with Canadian Helicopter
International is providing charter helicopter service flights and services for
offshore oil exploration.
Waterways
The Department of Waterways is carrying out the tasks of
providing navigational guidance, maintaining and building navigational channels,
tasks that are basic requirements in marine and riverine transport service. This
Department systematically check and register the liners, coastal vessels,
motor-boats for inland use, fishing boats and all kinds of power-crafts.
Moreover, it checks and registers cargo-boats, passenger-boats and supervise the
crafts navigation for the safety of passengers and cargos. It also undertakes
such works as finding demarcating sufficiently deep navigational channels to
facilitate riverine craft navigation, finding and removing under-water hazards
for safe plying of vessels.
Inland Water Transport
Inland Water Transport is undertaking passenger and cargo
transport services on rivers of Myanmar with powered craft, barges and pontoons.
It also undertakes building new craft and renovating existing ones to contribute
towards promoting secure and smooth transport. Besides it undertakes production
of machinery and parts needed by other industries.
Myanmar Five Star Line
Myanmar Five Star Line serves Thandwe, Kyaukphyu, Sittway,
Mawlamyine, Dawei, Myeik and Kawthaung in coastal trips. Containers service is
done with 3 vessels between Yangon and Singapore in regular trips. Myanmar Five
Star Line has 25 vessels including "Chin-Shwe Haw" and 'Mongla' for
foreign trips.
Myanmar Port Authority has to handle virtually all sea borne
imports and exports of Myanmar. It carried out plans in accord with transport
policies for the infrastruc development and reforms for proper evolution of the
market oriented economic system in keeping with the changing economic
situation. As the port development work are being carried out, one terminal
of Thilawa Port Development Project has been finished and commissioned
into use since 9 November, 1997. Besides, Ahlone No2. Terminal Construction
Project has been carried out. Moreover, deep-sea port projects are being carried out
at Kyaukphyu, Kalagauk, Dawei and Bokpyin.
The
Institute of Marine Technology was established to train
and produce maritime officers and engineering officers, in response to the need
for ship crews from 1963. In 1971, the Institute gained international
recognition. It has opened special classes to meet international needs in accord
with curricula of the World Maritime Organization. It has already trained 7,000
persons.
